TWIS #15

This week in science my group The Monsters did the Marshmallow challenge for the third time this school year.  This time it was a bit different.  Our materials were 20 dry spaghetti straws, a paper bag,  a roll of tape, one marshmallow and post its. We used the post its to communicate with each other. The challenge was to not communicate verbally. At first it was kind of exciting but I thought it would have been difficult. The second day this week in science we went to the rooftop of our school to record our This year in science video. The video was to inform our 10th grade teacher about our selfs and what we learned this year in science.

This week in science I  learned how to communicate non verbally with my group members. In the beginning of the school year our teams spaghetti structure fell. We didn't work well together since we just met each other. We were all shy so we lacked in communication skills. The second time we did much better. Yesterday we did even better than both times( as you can see in the diagram above) although we couldn't speak to each other we write on the post its to each other on how it would be better to hold up the tower. I like working in groups with people I know are determine as I am in getting a good grade. In the beginning of the year it was a bit difficult working in groups because we just met. We taped about five spaghetti straws together and folded the paper bag , we insert the taped spaghetti in the center of the folder paper bag and  placed it in-between our desk to hold it up. We worked very well together this third time.

TWIS #14

This week in science we read an article about habitat loss.  We had to search on youtube a marine life chain videos and order them.  My class and I read about the HIPPO dilema and yesterday May 23, We made posters about wind.

This week in science learned that HIPPO stands for Habitat loss; when people destroy animals habitat Introduced Species; a new species moving into someone else's home.  Pollution; oil spills kill animals, acid rain destroy forest, when human impact on mother nature. The last P stans for Pollution growth: their are more people being born than dying and O represents Over-consumption; one american uses as much energy as 422 people in ethiopia.  I also learned that wind is an renewable engery source

TWIS 13



If we were to leave the spider's habitat tanks sealed but removed all of the plants the spider would not serve they wouldnt get enough oxygen because plants give the spiders oxygen but take in carbon dioxide. The plants need the process of photosynthesis for their glucose.

This week in science 12

This week in science my classmates and I made a cellar spider booklet to keep some information n there. We also watched a Brainpop video and then took a quiz after it. through out the week we also worked on worksheets on the 7 kingdoms, food chains and roles on the ecosystem. We also finally got our cellar spider on monday we had to do even more research on them to put the information on the booklets.

 This week in science i learned that cellar spiders live in quiet and dark places such as garages, caves and houses. Cellar spiders have harmful venmon in them but if they bite you, it wouldnt be a danger to you because there mouths are to weak to inject throw the human skin. What i learned from the brainpop video was that all living and nonlivng things are all connected together because they live in the same ecosystem. I also learned that abiotic means non living and biotic means living. I learned that Saprophytes is just a fancy word for decompsers. Another interesting thing I learned was about the symbiotic relationships and that symbiotic means living together. One more thing I learned this week in science was that just one disapearance in the food chain is extremly affective to the entire food chain.

this week in science 11

  This week in science we got new seats. When we walked in to class on Monday there were large chart paper with scientific words hung up all around the room. David and Angela went around passing out post its to us and our assignment was to write down on the post its what we think the words mean then stick them to the large chart paper in the proper word. Then on Wednesday we went out to Seward park to gather things such as soil leaves and other things. We wanted to make an ecosystem for our spirders to live in. We also took pictures of things we saw at the park and on Thursday we downloaded the pictures to the mac computers and we had to annotate and explain how did the image in the photo important in the ecosystems in Seward park. We also did back round research on the cellar spiders and drew on a blank paper ho our tank/ecosystem looks like.


  I learned that if you put pebbles on the bottom of the spirders tank and soil on top it will provent the spiders feces from sticking to the bottom of the tank. Doing backround research we learned that cellars spiders are also called daddy long leg, they vibrate when they are being attacked so that you wont see them and cellar spiders cant bite humans because there fangs are to short.  I also learned the definition of photosynthesis it is the process by which green plants and some other organisms use sunlight to synthesize foods from carbon dioxide and water.

This month in science

  In the beginning of the month in science, David showed us videos of how humans impact the environment in negative ways. Then we formed a four groups of six: energy, waste, transportation, and the one i am in water. We first brain stormed how humans make an impact in water. Afterward we came out with questions we had to answer each day for a week which was  
how many minutes do you use washing the dishes per day?

how many times do you flush the toilet today?


how do you feel after brushing your teeth after leaving the water running? 

Then David made a survey with a couple of questions from each group then we went to survey people in the community. We made a poster with the information that we gathered. we also tested the hardness of water from different places in new york city. Towards the ending of the month we began to brain storm ideas for a slogan , for our campaign.We also made different posters for our t-shirts and combined our idea's together and drew this ..














What i learned this month was that we (humans) impact our environment alot with things as little as leaving your computer or tv on. Many people on the lower east side dont own tv's and most of them also open the faucet over ten times per day. I've also learned that Feces goes into the water and it affects the marine life it contaminates the water , the animals drink or eat the infected feces then fishermen capture the fishes for us humans to eat and it causes disease and it affects us right back. For our poster i began to do research and i found out that out of all the water we have on earth only 3% of water is drinkable but 2% is frozen glaciers, so we only have 1% to drink althought 75% of water covers  earth surface. We also tested water from brooklyn water fuacet, schools fish tank and school water fountain and we learned the schools water fountain is the cleanest and the schools fish tank had feces in it.

This week in science #9

This week in science we dissected animals , my group dissected a perch and a skate. we had to sketch out the animals from different angles from its Dorsal View and Ventral View. then we had to open photo booth and take pictures of it and upload them to google doc's. then we cut the perch into a rectatangle shape and we had to first locate the gill bladder and liver than take them out. with the skate we had to cut a circle in the center of it and look inside.

Earlier this week in science we learned how to use the utensils such as the scapel and the scissors designed espeically for cutting flesh. We also learned at is the Dorsal View.
Ventral View. i learned how to identify if a perch or a skate is male or female. My perch was a female perch and i learned that she was pregnant but most people take that out and make caviar out. in the skate we cut its intestines and we found that the skate had ate a sand crab. how come when my team and i removed its lungs and lever we found some oil behind it.


The two animals i dissected were the skate and the perch are similar because they are both marine animals but there body shape are very different. Both of the animals skin where very tough like the skate had spikes on them and the perch had a lot of scales on it. they both carried alot of water inside of there bodies.Another similarity
the perch has fins and the skate has fins too but the difference is that the skates are bigger.

This month in science #7


  This month in science my group and i made different slides on the tropical rain forest. We did screen casting. We had to make an agreement with all the group members on what to do when some ones absent or is not doing what the have to do right, i am glad we stuck to it. We all had to do research on google  about the tropical rain forest now and the animals that live there. Then, David and Jamie sent us a letter saying that our biome turned into the ocean 1,000 years later. So what we had to do is transform our pervious animal into an animal that would survive in that enviorment.



  This month in science I learned about a beautiful butterfly that lives in the tropical rain forest named blue morpho butterfly. i learned that my group works very well together. I also learned about the panthera tigris and how its prey is a monkey. I figured how to make one organism out of plenty. I also learned how to make a screen casting video.

Cricket Investigation

Question : Do crickets prefer fruit or vegetable ?

Hypothesis : if we put fruit on one side of the tank and vegetable on the other , i believe they would prefer fruit because david just put an apple in their tank so if they liked vegetables better he would of put a piece of lettuce or something in the tank.

   On one side we put celery and on the other side we put apple.

This Week In Science #6

      This week in science I have observed cricket behavior. We used four methods to see if crickets prefer damp or dry better. we had two crickets inside one tank, the whole tank had paper towels. In one side the paper towel was damp and on the other it was dry. the crickets stayed in the dry side most of the time. Then my group and i took off the lid. Afterward the crickets started to become more active. One of the crickets went on the damp side and then back to the dry side and both crickets began to fight. 

      Towards the end of the week my group and I had a mission challenge. We learned how to use dichotomous  keys. The challenge was to use different methods to classify jelly beans and see which method works best. To help us learn how to use dichotomous keys David showed us by using shoes from different students in our class room.

This week in science 5

   
        The video above is a video i found on youtube of this fascinating creature found in japan. i found this animal to be strange. 



 
This week in science my group and i have been observing animal behavior. we have been watching youtube videos of strange animal behavior it was actually interesting how animals behave way differently than humans act.  yesterday in class we were observing actual cickets. they barely were moving , the crickets were hidding the the loose leaft. Afterwards i saw a baby cricket come out of the paper and started eating the piece of apple that was there.

This week in science #1

 This week in science we did the marshmallow challenge and a plant invesitagation, we had to work with groups so it included alot of team work and using of  communication skills. On wednesday We had to make a tall structure out of spaghetti , a paper bag , tape and a Marshmallow.

 This week in science i learned to always have a plan before you begin any type of change or investigation and to follow a specific pureduce and to mainly  PLAN TIME.

   This week in science  I learned how Jamie , David and Nik grade our work. I had to read the rubric and understand what do we need in order to recieve a successful grade. we finally understood what  (XS)(MS)(AS) and (em) means. I learned that the Brassica rapa plant does really grow fast.

This Week in Science #2

  This week in Science my group and i started planing our Plant investigation #2. We tried to do different things we did not try before in our Plant investigation #1 like how does the placement of the plant effect the growth of the plant. then we planted the Brassica Rapa plant in three cups and we position them in different places , we dropped 10mililters of water in each cup.

   This week in science  Class our assignment was to research all bout the brassica rapa plant and gain information about the plant we are going to be observing for the next few weeks. So on google i found this photo of the Brassica Rapa i learned about  and how it is known for its advance growth. It is related to the mustard family.  Also it has orange/yellow pigment.
